St. John at Kaneo stands on a cliff above Lake Ohrid, about a 15–20 minute walk west of Ohrid Old Town. This guide covers every way to reach it — by air, intercity bus, on foot, and by boat.
Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle Airport is about 10 km from the city center. There is no frequent public bus, so the easiest option is an official taxi from the terminal to Ohrid Old Town (15–20 minutes, roughly 10–15 EUR). From there, continue on foot or by water taxi to the church.
Buses between Skopje and Ohrid run roughly every hour and take 3–3.5 hours (around 5–7 EUR). They arrive at the Ohrid bus station, a 25-minute walk or short taxi ride from the Old Town; from the Old Town you then walk to Kaneo.
From the Church of St. Sophia, head west along the lakeside Kaneo Boardwalk (direction Potpesh Beach). The path is mostly flat, then climbs a short stretch of stone steps to the cliff top — about 15–20 minutes in total. This is the most scenic and rewarding approach.
From Ohrid harbor or the city pier you can hire a small boat (water taxi) directly to Kaneo Beach. It costs about 5–10 EUR one way and spares the walk while giving you a panoramic view of the church from the water.
Vehicles cannot reach the cliff directly. Park near the Old Town or up at Plaošnik and walk down. Parking is limited and fills up in summer, so arrive early or choose a paid lot on the Old Town edge.
The wooden boardwalk is narrow with no guardrails and the stone steps get slippery when wet — wear non-slip shoes. Summer UV is strong, so bring water and sun protection. The final approach is on foot only, so pack light.
No. Cars stop at the Old Town or Plaošnik; the last stretch to the cliff is on foot only.
